Activities, Hikes & Wildlife

From reef to rainforest, Dunk Island offers a rare mix of marine adventure, scenic walks and unforgettable wildlife encounters, all within easy reach of the mainland.

Reef & Water Adventures

Dunk Island sits on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef, making snorkelling one of the island’s standout experiences. Join one of our trusted partner tour companies for a 2 hour snorkelling adventure exploring the sheltered inner reefs surrounding the island. These calm, coral fringed waters are ideal for spotting colourful reef fish and vibrant coral gardens.

Snorkel equipment is available for hire from Mission Beach Adventures. Book in your gear and pick it up from their shop in the town centre on the way to Dunk!

For those wanting the full reef spectacle, a day trip to Beaver Reef is a must. Widely regarded as one of the most picturesque sites on the Great Barrier Reef, Beaver Reef delivers crystal clear water, rich coral formations and an abundance of marine life that will stay with you long after you return to shore.

Closer to home, hire a kayak or stand up paddleboard and explore the coastline at your own pace. Glide along quiet bays, drift over shallow reef edges or simply float and soak up the tropical surrounds.

Rainforest Walks & Island Views

Much of Dunk Island is protected National Park, with walking tracks that lead through dense rainforest, along beaches and up to breathtaking lookouts. Trails range from gentle coastal strolls to more challenging climbs, including the ascent to Mt Kootaloo, where sweeping views stretch across the Family Islands and mainland coast. These walks showcase ancient rock formations, towering trees and shaded forest corridors that feel a world away from everyday life.
