Dunk Island Seasons

Nature’s Rhythm in the Tropics

Dunk Island enjoys a tropical climate, where sunshine and rain collaborate to create one of the most lush and diverse ecosystems in Australia. No matter when you visit, you’ll be immersed in a living, breathing tapestry of wildlife, warm waters, and natural beauty.

Two Seasons, One Paradise

The year on Dunk Island can be divided into two distinct seasons – Dry and Wet – each bringing its own unique magic.

Dry Season (May to November)

The dry season is the most popular time to visit, with warm sunny days, minimal rainfall, and reliable weather patterns. From May through November, you’ll enjoy perfect hiking conditions, calm seas ideal for snorkelling, and star-filled skies at night. September is typically the driest month making it a prime time for outdoor adventures, camping, and island exploration.

Wet Season (December to April)

Often referred to as the “green season,” these months bring higher rainfall and the possibility of tropical storms, especially between January and March. But don’t let that deter you, this season breathes new life into the island. Waterfalls flow, the forest hums with birds and frogs, and the island feels more alive than ever. Rain mostly falls in short, tropical bursts, often in the evening, so you can still enjoy balmy, sun-kissed days.

Temperature & Weather Year-Round

Dunk Island is warm all year long, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) in July to 31°C (88°F) in December

Sea temperatures range from 23°C (74°F) in winter (July) – perfect for swimming, snorkelling and paddling. However the sea temperatures rise to 29°C (84°F) in summer (December to February), making the ocean at this time of year not safe due to stingers.

Night temperatures dip to 15°C (59°F) in July and stay a warm 23°C (74°F) in January. So if you’re visiting in Winter pack a light jumper, but you’ll rarely need more than that.

Summer Safety – Marine Stingers

During the summer months (November to May), marine stingers like Box Jellyfish and Irukandji may be present in the water which is why we don’t recommend swimming at this time of year.

Seasonal Trading

Dunk Island’s restaurant, Eco Tents and Ferry service will close for a period of time over the Summer to allow the island some breathing space for regeneration over the wet season, although the campsites and amenities remain open. So if you’re planning a visit between January and March make sure you’re self sufficient with food and supplies for an enjoyable stay.
