You have the ferry booked, or you are about to book it, and now you want to know whether the summit walk is realistic before your return sailing.
Good news: it is, and there is a track here for every kind of day. As a national park, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service keeps the island's four walking tracks graded, mapped and clearly signed, and you can pick up a printed trail map from us on the day or download it before you travel.
This guide puts all four tracks in one place, with the distance, time and grade for each, plus what you see along the way, so you can pick the one that fits your day and make the most of every hour on the island.

What walking tracks are on Dunk Island?
Dunk Island has roughly 13 km of walking tracks across four main routes: the easy 3 km Muggy Muggy Beach track, the moderate 7 km Mount Kootaloo Circuit, the moderate 7.5 km Coconut Beach track and the moderate 11 km Island Circuit.
- Four main tracks, roughly 13 km of walking track in total.
- One track is graded easy: Muggy Muggy Beach, 3 km return, approximately 70 minutes.
- The other three are graded moderate, ranging from 7 km to 11 km return.
- The longest, the Island Circuit, takes approximately 4 hours.
Here is every track side by side, so you can see at a glance which one suits your day.
| Track | Grade | Distance | Time | What you walk through |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Muggy Muggy Beach track | Easy | 3 km return | approx. 70 minutes | Rainforest, coastal woodland and mangroves to Muggy Muggy Beach |
| Mount Kootaloo Circuit | Moderate | 7 km return | approx. 3 hours | A climb to the 271 m summit, WWII radar station ruins, views over the Family Islands and mainland |
| Coconut Beach track | Moderate | 7.5 km return | approx. 2.5 hours | Beach edge and council esplanade, rocky sections, mangrove views |
| Island Circuit | Moderate | 11 km return | approx. 4 hours | The summit, then Palm Valley down to Coconut Beach, returning on the Coconut Beach track |
NOTE: Trail access along Pallon Beach and Brammo Bay is restricted in tides over 2.8m. Please check tides before embarking on your journey or speak with a Dunk Island team member for advice. These grades and times follow the official Family Islands National Park track information. Grab a printed trail map from us when you arrive, or take a copy with you now.
What is the Muggy Muggy Beach track like?
The Muggy Muggy Beach track is the easiest of the Dunk Island walking tracks, at 3 km return and around 70 minutes. It runs through rainforest, coastal woodland and mangroves before opening onto Muggy Muggy Beach.
Pick this one if you want a proper walk with plenty of the day still ahead of you. The joy of it is the mix of habitats packed into a short distance: rainforest, then coastal woodland, then mangroves, then sand. Access to this trail is via Brammo Bay, which can be impeded by tides over 2.8m.
How hard is the Mount Kootaloo Circuit?
The Mount Kootaloo Circuit is graded moderate, covers 7 km return and takes around 3 hours, climbing to the island's highest point at 271 m above sea level.
The climb is the whole point. From the summit you get views over the Family Islands and back to the mainland coast, and the track passes the ruins of the WWII radar station that operated on Mount Kootaloo from 1942 to 1945.
Three hours is a comfortable walking-and-looking pace with time to enjoy the summit, so there is no need to rush it. Give yourself a little extra if you are walking with children, and pick a morning ferry that leaves you the afternoon to spare. If you're planning to dine at the Dunk Island Restaurant, please ensure you're back in time for lunch orders by 2:30pm. Access to this trail is via Brammo Bay, which can be impeded by tides over 2.8m.
What is the Coconut Beach track like?
The Coconut Beach track is 7.5 km return, graded moderate, and takes around 2.5 hours. It skirts the beach and follows the council esplanade, with rocky sections underfoot and mangrove views along the way.
It is longer than the Mount Kootaloo Circuit but quicker, because it is not climbing 271 m. If you would rather stay near the water than gain height, this is the one of the Dunk Island trails to choose.
Three things before you set off. Access to this trail is via Pallon Beach which can be impeded by tides over 2.8m. The route passes private property along the esplanade, so stay on the track, and the rocky sections need decent footwear, particularly after rain when unsealed surfaces get slippery. If you're planning to dine at the Dunk Island Restaurant, please ensure you're back in time for lunch orders by 2:30pm.
Is the Island Circuit worth it?
The Island Circuit is the longest of the Dunk Island hikes at 11 km return, graded moderate, taking around 4 hours. It links the Mount Kootaloo summit with Palm Valley and Coconut Beach, then returns along the Coconut Beach track.
The Island Circuit, Dunk Island's most complete walk, shows you the range of the place in one outing: the climb, the rainforest interior through Palm Valley, and the coastal stretch back. For a confident walker with a full day, it is the best value.
Give it a full day and it repays every hour. Four hours of walking plus the crossing at either end makes for a properly satisfying island day, and the loop keeps opening up something new the whole way round. If you're planning to dine at the Dunk Island Restaurant, we recommend the morning ferry which arrives just after 9am and heading straight out on the trail to be back in time for lunch (final orders 2:30pm). Please also check tides - if over 2.8m at the beginning or end of your walk access along the beachfront may be impeded. If you would rather keep your afternoon free, the Mount Kootaloo Circuit gives you the same summit and the same views in half the distance.
Which Dunk Island walking track should you choose?
Choose by the time you have first, then by how much climbing you want.
| If you have | And you want | Walk this |
|---|---|---|
| About an hour | A short rainforest and beach walk | Muggy Muggy Beach track (3 km) |
| Half a day | Views, history and a climb | Mount Kootaloo Circuit (7 km) |
| Half a day | Coastline without the ascent | Coconut Beach track (7.5 km) |
| A full day | To see as much of the island as possible | Island Circuit (11 km) |
A few extra pointers:
- Walking with young children or anyone unsure of their fitness? Muggy Muggy Beach track.
- Want the WWII radar station ruins and the view over the Family Islands? You need Mount Kootaloo, either the 7 km circuit or the 11 km loop.
- Keen on wildlife? Walk any track slowly. More than 100 bird species have been recorded here, including orange-footed scrubfowl and emerald dove, and the metallic blue and black Ulysses butterfly is the island's best known insect.
For what else fills a day here, see the guide to things to do on Dunk Island.
What should you take on a Dunk Island walk?
Take more drinking water than you think you need, sun protection and footwear with grip.
- Drinking water for every person, for the full length of your chosen track.
- Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses.
- Closed shoes with grip, especially for the rocky parts of the Coconut Beach track.
- Something to carry your rubbish out in.
- A trail map. Pick up a printed copy from us on the day, or save the downloadable Dunk Island walking trails map to your phone before you travel, since there is no public WiFi on the island.
Timing matters as much as kit. The crossing from Clump Point Jetty at Mission Beach takes about 20 minutes, the ferry runs twice daily Wednesday to Sunday (seven days a week during the Queensland June and September school holidays). Check the timetable and book the ferry to Dunk Island before planning an 11 km walk around it. The ferry, restaurant and Eco Tents also close from January to March each year for island regeneration.
Can you walk to Edmund Banfield's grave?
Unfortunately Edmund Bandfield's grave is currently inaccessible however plans to open a pathway are underway.
Edmund James Banfield, known as "The Beachcomber", settled on Dunk Island with his wife Bertha in September 1897. He lived here for 26 years, wrote Confessions of a Beachcomber (1908) among other books about the island, and died on 2 June 1923 aged 70. Bertha stayed on after his death and was later buried alongside him.

Can you do the Island Circuit as a day trip?
Yes, if you plan around the ferry. The Island Circuit is 11 km return and takes approximately 4 hours of walking, so check the current timetable and allow time either side of the crossing, which takes about 20 minutes each way.
Do you need a guide to walk on Dunk Island?
No. All four tracks are clearly signed and graded, we work closely with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to keep them that way, and a Dunk Island walking trail map is available in print on the island or as a download before you travel.
Is there a walking track map for Dunk Island?

Plan your walk
Pick your track, check the ferry timetable, and pack water and shoes with grip. If one day does not feel like enough, camp overnight on the island and split the walking across two mornings, the comfortable way to do both the summit and the coast without watching the clock. Whichever route you choose, download the trail map before you leave the mainland and start early while it is cool.
